Yet Another Disconnected Inference.

The more closely I observe people, the more it disturbs me. And I'm left to wonder how we could possibly have come this far in time, as a civilization.

The real villain isn't the thug with a gun, prowling dark alleys. It's the white glove that conceals the claws, and sugary smiles that hide venomous fangs.

The most vicious evil is also the most innocuous one as Milan Kundera said.

Batman wud so agree with your post, wudnt he?

But I suppose the only reason we've survived as a "civilization" is either pure dumb blind luck or the fact that we are capable of powerfully deluding ourselves nearly all of the time..

I think it's transfigured civilization that is the silent assassin. So neatly manipulatively sinister that at times it appears to be reasonable.

How you take the words from my fingers. I have become a misanthrope without wanting to be. Sad.

Tooheys have taken over. Evolved Tooheys who don't have a fraction of the prototype's intellect.

I find myself getting attached to a lot of people all the time, without really liking who they are.

It scares me.

@ Tangled up in blue : Out of the two reasons you cite, I find myself leaning at a majorly obtuse angle towards the second.

It's the rose-tinted glasses, isn't it? The ostrich-approach to things. At first sign of danger, dig head into the ground and pretend it isn't there. Ingenious.

@ Misanthropist : Exactly. That, is the essence of what I wanted to say. Not the reasonable part though. I think, to a considerable extent, it's just quid pro quo.

@ Mer-curial-maiden : Misanthropy has become all the more indispensable. It's almost a survival tactic. Better than the hypocrisy, at any rate.

You are so right about the dim-witted Toohey clones. Not even the sort you might hope to debate the issue with. Grr...!

@ Death On Two Legs : I've been there, trust me. And now that I'm not, I've acquired a reputation for being notoriously anti-social and apathetic. I guess it's a choice you've got to make, somewhere down the line.

I don't think it's a matter of right or wrong. It's a question of what lets you be at peace with yourself.

Those last 2 lines. I think they're at the root of everything. I agree with them, I really do.

And yet there will be enough of 'good'-ness to let the civilization survive. (I know I'm an optimist :) )

Maybe, we just survived because there are too many of us to die out that easily.

@ mgeek : I wish I shared the sentiment. Would do wonders for my mental well-being. *grins*

@ Anty : You have a point. I might delve into studying the behavioral characteristics of cockroaches as research, on that note.

Come to think of it, I have an Organizational Behavior mini-thesis due for next week. Heh! There's an idea!

There is a reason why they say ignorance is 'bliss'.
People always _want to know the truth, the reality; not everybody can handle it or accept it even.

I made a choice and a lot of my beliefs have already crumbled.

As long as one has it in them not to slip on the rose-tinted glasses...

It takes a lot. Of integrity, character, and what not!
